Istanbul – Bâb-ı Âlî (The Sublime Porte)

In the light mist of a Sunday morning in Sierre, Valais, we left quietly. Only the size of our backpacks betraying that we might be gone for quite some time.

By the window, those mountains which didn’t move an once when the monstrous digger allowed the trains in will certainly be just the same when we’ll come back in 8 months. But can we really think of the return ? No. These long journeys are always made of myriads of stepping stones and we know there is no point trying to project ourselves too far in the future. Today will just do for now.

We laugh at the contrast between this typically Swiss lady selling chocolates in a neat little shop in Zurich and the turmoil of the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.

This first stop-over at the door of Asia welcomes us with exciting scents and beats and it’s quite puzzling to see two continents so simply connected by the work of men. Tomorrow we’ll go and explore the other side.
